From the Author

I wrote this book because my best friend went on a whistle-stop 10 day, 4 country tour of the Far East. The thought of all that travel, all those incredible sights and sounds was mind-boggling! I haven't been on holiday for, like, ages and I started thinking about the kind of memories and experiences I'd want to take from such an exciting trip. I've been practicing meditation and mindfulness in my life for the past 16 years, so as this is my mindset I figured a mindful travel journal was the most obvious basis for this book. I was really struck by the idea of saving a moment, a memory and pinning it on a page. So that was the basic idea for the book. I made a list of all the different types of experiences you have on holiday and developed it from there. As the theme of mindfulness is central to the book, it was very important that book 'walks the walk'...so I contacted Neil Kerfoot at the charity Village by Village to see if we could work with them. They were more than happy to partner with us and "You are here - a mindful travel journal" supports the Clean Hands Saves Lives project. For me, this made beautiful sense; such a simple idea of washing your hands is a good fit for the simple mindfulness practice of simply breathing. I'm honoured and delighted to be working with Village by Village - they do amazing work with remote villages in Ghana. They build wells, schools, clinics, sanitation facilities and genuinely make a massive different to the lives of the Ghanian villagers. 10% of the profits of this book go to Village by Village.

I am a 28 year old woman and I received this as a gift from a friend before my trip to Europe, and I am so thankful to have had it! Some of the prompts are serious and some are silly, but there are very few that I didn't write or draw something for. I probably never would have thought to independently capture many of the things that this journal did. It is most definitely for someone with a sense of humor about themselves and their journey, so it may not be a great fit for someone looking to capture their trip in a more somber style. I love this journal and absolutely will be purchasing in the future for myself and for friends.

I've suffered from depression on and off for a long time and have come a long way in the last 6 months when I started therapy for some recent issues. I also get some secondary anxiety and indecision issues to go along with it. I'm planning a road trip all across the united states to last a couple months for this coming summer and bought this journal as a travel companion to help me guide myself. I cracked it open a few weeks ago while I'm still in the planning phase and it is perfect! Lots of space for doodling, thought logging, guided mindfulness exercises, beginners meditation walkthroughs, areas to help you prep for your trip where you can stick ticket stubs, write contact numbers, etc. And all this stuff is prompted for you. I mean this thing is beyond perfect. Got me started on some meditation exercises and has really helped me maintain a calm demeanor. I'm so excited to fill it up when I'm traveling.

This book is super cute. I plan to use it when my husband and I and go on vacation to the Bahamas. we will be in the airport for several hours flying to Florida. Although I do not want to ruin the entire book for myself, I did read a couple pages. The ones that I read were adorable and for the lack of a better term very mind opening? The book kind of points out things that you should look at differently or to pay more attention to you and I really enjoyed that. I cannot wait to use this book and documents my vacation with my husband and have something to look at a few years down the road and really remember what happened

I bought a few journals and this one, while maybe a little more simple (looks-wise) than the others, was the one that tugged at my heartstrings the most. I gave this to my daughter the night before her study abroad trip to Spain. I wrote little notes all throughout the journal as a little surprise she will see while journaling. This journal has some great, thought provoking questions which is what really sold me on it. It's also amusing at times without being overdone or cheesey.

Although I am still writing in this journal as my trip isn't for another two months, it does offer a chapter to work on in preparation. (as well as chapters for the trip itself and follow up afterwards) The content within is great and definitely gets me thinking of ideas to write down. There is plenty of space to write, draw, paste pictures and make the journal your own. With the limited ability to find single trip travel journals, I was happy to find this one. I look forward to filling it up!

I really liked this journal! My only wish was that there were a few blank pages at the beginning or the end. This is definitely a reflective and fun journal for a trip. It helps spark ideas and keeps you grounded and in the moment. I would repurchase for another trip for sure!

Nothing wrong with the item itself, it just wasn't my thing once I got it and could see the prompts inside. I suppose I had wanted more room for unguided thoughts and such. I liked the idea of being mindful of the places you visit, and to enjoy them more fully, but this just wasn't the journal for me.

It's a cute journal but has way to many things that I didn't need. It gives you prompts for things to write but it seemed almost childish. Very flimsy cover.I used it for my Italy trip and it served the purpose but a notebook would have been just as good.

Churchill was a very fine writer and since I live in East Africa, I was especially interested to read his descriptions of early 20th century wildlife and ecology and landscapes and societies. It is rather frustrating to me 110 years later to wade through the British colonial attitudes that were entrenched in his time: his low expectations of Africans and their societies, his assumption that most of the big game was meant to be hunted and most of the resources were meant to be exploited -- how tragic that so much of what he wished came true, in many ways. It is a window into the British power mindset and 19th century ideas about unbridled industrialism. I almost wanted to cry when he described Kampala and the Kwampaka because it was so beautiful (not quite the description I'd give today!) It's interesting to contrast his writing with Isabella Bird's, who, even though she traveled 40 years earlier, was far less burdened with being white and British.

Great book on African adventure. If you like this book you will want to read the following 99 cent classics of African travels:1. Alone Among the Zulus: The Narrative of a Journey Through the Zulu Country, South Africa (1866)2. First Footsteps in East Africa or, An Exploration of Harar [Illustrated] (1856)3. Tropical Africa (1889)4. A Camera Actress in the Wilds of Togoland (1915)5. The Life and Exploits of Hugh Clapperton the Distinguished Voyager, Adventurer, and Discoverer (1840)6. Scouting for Stanley in East Africa (1890)7. Through the Kalahari Desert (1886)8. Lassoing Wild Animals in Africa (Illustrated) (1911)9. Stories of the Gorilla Country (1870)10. The Unknown Horn of Africa (1888) (With active table of contents)

Churchill's "My African Journey" is an interesting salad of observations from an East African journey more than a century ago: eloquent descriptions of landscape, astute observations of colonials and native peoples, crisp accounts of hunting--including, alas, a white rhino--and enthusiastic, boosterish pitches for damming gorges and laying railroad tracks. Some respectful and complimentary remarks on local peoples and their leaders may surprise readers who imagine that Churchill was an unnuanced, condescending imperialist. A small assortment of decent photos helps set the scene. Chapters vary in interest and polish, but overall this small book is worthwhile.

The font is so tiny that it is impossible to read and it does not contain the photographs in the original version. I recommend the kindle version instead.

This book is a gem written by the hand of Sir Winston Churchill. It is the fascinating story of a safari from Kenya in British EastAfrica through Uganda and to the source of the Nile and thenfollowing the White Nile and then the Blue Nile to Cairo. Thistravel included forays on both Lake Victoria and Lake Albertwith also a visit to Murchison Falls. The narrative is repletewith descriptions of people encountered, , terrains traversed, and wild game both observed and hunted. Of particularinterest were the encounters with elephants and whiterinocerouses. Included is how life was lived on safari. SirWinston also provides commentary on the promise of theseAfrican lands in the future. The book is easily readable dueto Sir Winston's very professional narrative style owing fromhis having been a military journalist. What is remrkable isthat this African journey took place and the book writtenin 1907.

Churchill's journey through Africa as a young man is full of the brash self-confidence, the astonishing energy and focus that allowed the older Churchill to weather Britain's greatest challenges. It is also an account of unquestioned belief on his part of the advantages of empire to both subjects and rulers, the joys of big game hunting, the street-wise insights into the dynamics and personal qualities of those who manned the watchtowers and railway stations of the Empire. This is Churchill in the process of developing empathy, but before maturing.

I loved this book. Mostly I cherished the deep insights that Winston Churchill had about the early days for the British in Africa. Excellent reading!

This book, written in the first decade of the 1900s, captures - for good and for ill - the attitude of an English colonialist toward the East African English colonies and their inhabitants. As with all Churchill's writings, his prose is highly readable. The story he tells, tho, is less compelling than other of his works. The tale recounts his journey from the Kenyan coast, to the central lakes region, then down the Nile to Egypt. While the tale of his journey is only mildly interesting, the depiction of the colonialist's outlook is far more noteworthy. As a kid studying history, I never fully grasped what was meant by "the white man's burden". This volume brings that phrase to life, unconsciously depicting the presumptions and self-interests behind it. Some will condemn Churchill as racist, others will see him merely as a product of his time and place in the social order of the day. One last note: the pictures in this Kindle edition are fuzzy and don't reveal much. However, if you do a Google search on many of the places referenced in the book (e.g. Murchison Falls) you will find some spectacular images online.

When Elephants Fly, by Nancy Richardson Fischer

Review

"When Elephants Fly is a compelling read, beautifully threading the complex relationship between mothers and daughters, mental illness and elephants."-National Book Award finalist Carrie Arcos "Not only does this book show the reader the perils of keeping elephants in zoos and having them perform in circuses, it does it with heart, grace, and imagination." -Nina Berry, author of The Notorious Pagan Jones and the Otherkin series "Unlike anything I've read before in YA, When Elephants Fly is both a fascinating adventure and a stirring coming-of-age novel. There are few clear heroes or villains, and no easy answers for Lily as she moves into an uncertain future. The bond between elephant and girl is deftly wrought-reminiscent of Alec and the Black in Walter Farley's classic, The Black Stallion, but for an older, contemporary audience." -Sara Zarr, author of Gem & Dixie, National Book Award finalist "When Elephants Fly will inspire readers to love through fear, to love themselves and their humanity, to love the world." - Jenny Torres Sanchez, author of The Fall of Innocence "Nancy Richardson Fischer deserves high praise for her well-researched and endearing novel. Her imagination, craft, and effort has resulted in her writing a piece of fiction that is worthy of winning a prize. This really is an outstanding piece of fiction that cannot be recommended enough." –New York Journal of Books "As much a story about mental health as it is about compassion and evolution." –School Library Journal "Fischer's story encompasses the themes of love, courage, and forgiveness with lively, well-rounded characters, not the least of whom is Swifty. Lily is especially vibrant as she evolves from her quiet, safe existence into someone who recognizes the difference between simply being alive and living." –Booklist "Compelling...Provides a relevant and relatable character in an often overlooked subject area." –TeenReads.com "Nancy Richardson Fischer has managed to combine so many important topics-family, mental illness, extinction, animal welfare, and adolescence-into an accessible, moving and extraordinary story." -Ellen C. O'Connell, Executive Vice President, Global, Space for Giants "This book was an absolute pleasure to read. I encourage everyone to read this inspirational book and discuss mental illness and tolerance and the need to improve wildlife protection." -Katie Rowe, Pritzker Genius Award nominee, Co-founder Reteti Elephant Sanctuary

When elephants fly is such an inspirational and uplifting book. The author deftly addresses mental health, family, and relationship issues in a compelling story of an unlikely heroine on a quest to save an elephant calf. It is a clear and well-written story that is great for adults, teens and book clubs.

I couldn't put this book down! It shines a light on so many important topics while telling a wonderful story that keeps you hooked. It made me think, cry, and laugh, while following T. Lily and Swifty's journey together. It shares realistic truths about the world we live in through a heart warming story of a young woman coming into her own and the special bonds that can be shared with animals. It's a great story for teenage or adult readers.

A delicate book that offers an important story, while also benefiting elephants. One of the best change-maker books of 2018.

This book had me hooked from the first page!. I loved the characters, the twists in the plot and couldn't stop thinking about the book once I had finished. You really should read this book!!

Beautiful book.

I received an early release copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher. As a person with an education background in psychology, I had some misgivings about the subject matter of this novel going into it. Lily's schizophrenic mother tried to kill her when she was a young girl. Lily struggles to deal with that trauma and also the looming threat of developing the disorder herself, given the genetic component. Schizophrenia is a such a highly stigmatized illness, and a novel with a schizophrenic character committing such a dramatic act of violence at the center of the story is concerning. While delusions in thought can cause a person with schizophrenia to become violent, most people living with this disorder are not violent and are at far greater risk of harming themselves than they are anyone else. So while Lily's story is certainly not out of the realm of possibility in the real world, these are important things to keep in mind when reading a story like this. That being said, I do think that Fischer made efforts to treat the subject matter with sensitivity. She has used Lily's concerns about developing the disorder as a means to relay information to the reader; Lily has researched this topic tirelessly as a means of maintaining a sense of control over her life and mental health, and is aware, for example, of the risk of suicide for patients dealing with this disorder. Lily is a very sympathetic protagonist who is acutely aware of her risk of developing this disorder; she also gives the reader a window into what it feels like to be unfairly dismissed based on their mental health status.Certain characters look down on Lily based on the mere possibility that she may have inherited her mother's illness; should this possibility prove to be true, the contempt would be that much worse. Any and all of Lily's opinions can be dismissed based on the speculated status of her mental health. For an insecure and yet passionate young woman just emerging into adulthood, this is excruciating. And then there's Swifty. I got so emotionally invested in this baby elephant; Lily's connection with Swifty is palpable, and my heart broke for both of them as Swifty struggled after being rejected by her mother. Many of the passages about Swifty are very well written, but some of them showcase the novel's main weakness, in my opinion. It's very clear that Fischer wanted this novel to educate, and that's admirable. However, with a 400 page book dealing with intricate subjects such as mental health, adolescence, parenting, and animal rights, the information may not always be woven seamlessly into the story. Certain passages felt forced and awkward. It sometimes felt like the author's own research was pasted into the story without regard to the overall flow of the novel; it had the effect of pulling the reader momentarily out of the story.Overall, this was a strong novel. It was well-paced with a well-developed and sympathetic protagonist. The story was interesting and multi-faceted. It brought us a character who, despite her overwhelming anxiety about her mental health, is more than her mental health status. Lily has people who love her deeply and a cause she's willing to fight for.

There are not enough words to explain to you that this book is so good and a must read! The moment I read the synopsis I knew I had to read this one and it did not disappoint in the least bit. T. Lily is a girl who has a family history of schizophrenia and the odds of her getting it does not look good for her. So her and her dad are determined to have her live an easy going stress free life. That is until she meets Swifty the elephant and her world is turned upside down. It was so powerful to read Lily start putting herself first and living her life instead of being afraid of it. Going on this journey was so inspiring and a very meaningful read and exactly the kind of YA book you want to see out there! I can't thank the author enough for this amazing read and one of my tops reads for 2018!

I started out this one a little unsure how I would feel about it, but by the end of the book I was so glad I was able to just sit and read with no interruptions, because this was such a page-turner. There were so many different aspects to this story. So many things that tugged at my heart. Not only the big things talked about in the synopsis, the fact that Lily is worried about schizophrenia taking over her life and the baby elephant, Swift Jones - or Swifty, whose mom has rejected her, but also Lily's best friend Sawyer who has a family that does not support him, even going so far as to forcing him to move out. And then there is the circus that takes ownership of the Swifty, and while there are the issues that you'd imagine with a circus and animals, there are even more things going on behind the scenes and between the family members that run it. Not to mention that Lily finds out things about her dad and mom's relationship, and comes to realize just why her father was doing the things he was the way he did after her mom was gone.I learned a lot about elephants, and a lot about schizophrenia as well. I knew that schizophrenia was a complicated and oftentimes scary mental illness, but didn't realize all the types there were, and just all the ways it could manifest. I also didn't know how much it could be overcome in some cases, and that it wasn't a set cure of just taking medicine and being okay.It was actually a little nice bit of a break to get a girl that was as innocent as Lily was, boyfriend-wise, sexually, etc., and to get a story that fit that type of a teenager perfectly. I feel like I'd been pretty close to that aspect in my teen years. So I enjoyed the way that was done in the book. By the end I was just so into the story I couldn't put it down, and finished it really quickly, hoping that they'd be able to save Swifty, and that other things would resolve themselves as well.
