After reading another autobiography, I felt I needed to read a suspense police procedural or thriller. Then, lo and behold, I found that a book I had pre-ordered appeared on my Kindle this morning. Launched into it several hours ago and found it to be better than some, but not quite hitting every note quite right for my desires in private eye stories. That, however, is getting ahead of the story.Please let me first address some key points:BLUSH FACTOR: It is no big secret that J. K. Rowling writes also as Robert Galbraith. Doing so is a smart move, as it signals that the story is fit more for adults than for kids. And, to be sure, the language and discussions within this epic novel is not the sort recommended for young ears or church prayer groups. There is sexual content but not graphic. Just intimate enough to titillate…The blush factor information is not provided as a complaint, nor as a cause for rating the book four stars instead of five. Rather, because it does so well portray the grittier side of life as I believe it to be for the sorts of characters depicted, I am tempted to raise the rating instead of lower it. Still, I am sure some readers will appreciate the caution.SOUL: Yes, because “Lethal White” does get so deeply into the seedier side of life for the types of characters depicted, one could say it has soul.POV: This story is told to us in third person.THE WRITING FLOW: The flow though out “Lethal White” is easy to read. And faster reading than one might expect from a 600-plus page epic. Some reviewers are sure to complain about the length and the tendency to slow down the pace, but do not count me as one of them. I appreciate the pace-changing that kept me turning the pages. Further, the character development is better than I expected, making the story well worth reading.Excerpt‘…Strike, who had spent large portions of his childhood living in squalor, found a disregard for hygiene hard to like, except in those people so unhappy or ill that cleanliness became an irrelevance.“Ex-army, aren’t you?” she asked, but Jimmy spoke over her.“How did Billy know how to find you?”“Directory inquiries?” suggested Strike. “I don’t live in a bat cave.”“Billy doesn’t know how to use directory inquiries.”“He managed to find my office OK.”“There’s no dead kid,” Jimmy said abruptly. “It’s all in his head. This book was a pre-order, set to load on my kindle two days before my birthday. The only complaint I can muster is that I read these books as soon as they are released and then have to wait a year+ for the next one. No spoilers here. I will say that I enjoyed this one just as much as the 1st installment "Cuckoo's Calling". None of the books in this series have been a disappointment but I do have my favorites, of course. I wish that I could write a lengthy review but I just finished reading Lethal White and I'm exhausted. I'm hooked on this series and probably more invested in the eventual outcome for Strike and Robin than I should be. Aaannd now I have to wait a year+ for the next installment.

Disappointed... the last third of the book was pretty good, more like a 4. But in order to get to that you had to suffer over the whole 'Matthew is mean', 'Matthew is a horrible husband.' It got So Old. I hate Matthew. I don't like him as a character, never have. I thought that the first 2/3 of the book focused far too much on the love triangle / rectangle of it all. Also, I thought that the overall plot was... bizarre. I recently watched the Strike TV show (you can get it through iTunes), and while I love the main characters, the plots themselves are so bizarre in general, but this I thought was the Worst of all the plots of the Cormoran Strike books and plots. They only mentioned what a 'lethal white' was once. I think it refers to the painting in question. I hope that the next book is far, far better. Less romance, no Matthew, and less 'my achy leg'. I love the main characters, but this feels like a departure from the earlier books in so many ways. In the end J.K. Rowling says that this book was one of the most complicated and difficult she has ever written... really? This is probably my Least Favorite J.K. Rowling book... ever. All the Harry Potter books I loved - I was never very critical of them, just feasted on them. If this is the most difficult book you've ever written, maybe that's because it wasn't working? Spoilers - I figured out that the son and the mother-in-law were having an affair at least half way through the book, but the other pieces were basically impossible to guess, although I enjoyed the mystery. Also, I was extremely disappointed that the entire beginning of the story, Billy, ended up basically being pointless. I think a plot where the favorite son who died somehow popped up would've been so much better!

Love the style of writing and devotional insight!

This is an outstanding resource for students of biblical Hebrew.

If you went to seminary then buy this book!

I appreciate this devotional as a helpful way of practicing my Hebrew reading. The life application excerpts are not extensive, yet good. Some devotions are a hit and miss.

This is a much better book than its Greek counterpart, not because of comparing content but because of comparing goals and then whether they accomplished it or not. This has a twofold aim of encouraging “students and pastors to continue (or resume) using their Hebrew knowledge in their devotions and sermon preparations” (p.13) and also “to demonstrate that a knowledge of the original languages can and should be spiritually rewarding” (p.13). It is also stated that the authors’ hope and prayer “that readers would be drawn to a deeper love for, understanding of, and adherence to Scriptures and the God who gave them” (p.14). At the back cover, this book will inspire the reader to read and meditate on the Hebrew Scriptures and also find new treasures.There are 54 devotions with most of them about 2 ½ pages (one has 2 and one has 3 full pages). There are 38 contributors (29 men and 9 women) with sixteen (13 men and 3 women) of them writing two devotions each. All the books of the OT (devotions arranged in order of the Hebrew Bible) were covered at least once with Isaiah and Proverbs having four each and Psalms with 3 devotions plus some others (Genesis, Exodus, Deuteronomy, Joshua, 1 Samuel, Jeremiah and Zephaniah) with two each. The Hebrew texts alongside an English version (or translation) are shown before the devotions. This is a very helpful for I don’t use Hebrew as much as I do Greek and I need help to make sense of the passage, though I think that a transliteration of Hebrew might be better than a translation to help read the Hebrew text. There is a grammatical terms index and also a Hebrew words index. These indexes are helpful and page numbers of occurrence are listed. With the inclusion of YHWH in the word index, I think that all Hebrew words (root) used in the volume are included.It is indeed a good volume for it encouraged and challenged me to use (resume) my Hebrew in my devotions (or / and studies). Second, I have seen the benefit of the Hebrew. Just to give a few examples, in the discussion of singular “you” and plural “you” in Exo.20:4, I understood the significance of the singular (although I’m thinking it may be a collective use). In the discussion of Lev.18:4, the author demonstrated the importance of studying the Hebrew text than relying on the English translation for the English translated three verbs wherein the Hebrew text showed two verbs and an infinitive functioning as means (to accomplish the two verbs). Another example is the discussion of using lamed (with infinitive construct) in Proverbs 1:1-7 to indicate 5 purposes. I noticed it after reading the devotion (though the 5th purpose seemed lacking) and realized the accuracy of the 5 corresponding “for” in the NIV (also in HCSB; “to” in ESV; not clearly shown in my Tagalog Bible).The writing style of various contributors was varied. Some discussed their contributions by explaining the text (maybe with a little application at the end) and some wrote like a mini sermon with introduction and closing (with some varieties) and the body covered the discussion of Hebrew text. A few has end notes. Some presented their Hebrew discussion straight up what it means while some included explaining what is in the text (including lexical or grammatical options) and then the meaning of the text. Some are more helpful (with the Hebrew) than others. The discussions in Hebrew can be grammatical, lexical, literary (word play, assonance, etc. .) or just a fruit of Hebrew study (not showing the Hebrew itself) or a combination. A devotion in Proverbs 25:15 presented a meaning that contradicts the commentary of another contributor to this book.I would prefer that they included a variety of suggestions and tips how to read (and what to read) from these 38 scholars. I think that would be very beneficial to learn how they keep and improve their Hebrew language skills. Almost all contributors are professors (one is a former professor and currently a pastor) with a few involved in publishing or translation works. I think in future endeavors (second volume?), it would be good to include some pastors (who are primarily pastors) who are using their Hebrew in their sermon preparations.But with that said, overall, this is a great volume to invest in to encourage (and challenge) the reader to use Hebrew (with hard work) in studying the text that will yield benefits that cannot be determined from the English text alone.

It is common for those who have learned Hebrew to forget some of the vocab, syntax, and grammar. Hebrew is a big language, and it does take time and energy to keep it up! So I was excited to receive a review copy of "Devotions on the Hebrew Bible." I haven't read all 54 of these devotions, but I have read a good sample. I have to say I'm a bit disappointed. Here's why:1) The Hebrew font is super tiny. I'm not sure the exact font size, but it hurts my eyes (and I'm under 40!). I even had to look close to tell the difference between a nun (N) and a gimel (G). The tiny Hebrew font a major weakness of the book in my opinion.2) Each chapter has between one and five (sometimes more) verses in Hebrew with the English in a separate column. This is fine, but I very much wish there was more info on the vocab and parsing. The book doesn't really help for vocab, although some chapters do discuss a few vocab words of the verse. Also, for parsing I had to go to my Bible software for the tough/rare verbs. I wish there were more details about the Hebrew text!3) The devotionals are hit or miss. Sometimes the author makes a great point (e.g. Joel 2:13b-14a has notes that compare the text to Jonah 4:2); other times the application is a little cheesy and off-base (for example, on Gen. 15:6 there is no talk about justification - the author only mentions our faithfulness). In other words, not all of the devotionals are overly stimulating. In fact, one of them I read didn't really discuss the Hebrew text at all. This is a glaring weakness in a devotional to help keep up one's Hebrew!In summary, I think this devotional could be much better if 1) if the Hebrew font was a lot bigger, 2) it had more grammar, vocab, and syntax helps, and 3) the actual devotionals were better. I don't mean to be too harsh, but to be honest, I don't recommend it if you're looking for a book to help you keep your Hebrew.

Set in Ethiopia in the 1950s, Ambau's moving tale is a lively coming-of-age story with merging themes of forgiveness and redemption. Desta's early years are filled with longing to be loved more fully by his family and to understand why he is so often the object of his brothers' torment. He longs, too, for the day he will climb the mountain beyond his home to touch the sky and gather the clouds in his hands. For several years, he plans what he'll take on his journey, but he is too young to make the trek alone, and his sisters and mother repeatedly fall back on their promises to accompany him. On the eve of Desta's seventh birthday and his rite of passage into adulthood, his father, Abraham, reveals the duties that will now be expected of him; aside from his new grown-up responsibilities of tending animals and helping with harvests, Desta and his niece, Astair, have been tasked with contacting the spirits with the assistance of a sorcerer, Deb'tera Taye to ask for help in resolving his sister Saba's inability to conceive and carry a son to term. Desta's real troubles begin when a cloudlike man appears to him during the spiritual ceremony, providing instructions for Abraham and his family that will further anger Desta's brothers and turn them even more vehemently against him. To make matters worse, many in the community laugh at the boy and scorn him for what they suspect are wild imaginings. Ambau's deft descriptions of spiritual happenings and ancient blessings transport the reader to another time and place that almost seamlessly alternates between the magical world of the cloud man--stippled with dots and tinged with gold; and the despairing reality of a little boy who suffers brutal beatings at the hands of those he loves. Readers may wonder what caused the abrupt shift in Abraham's character when he whips the boy mercilessly, since the author has shown us a gentle and compassionate father to this point. One might also wonder at the quickness with which young Desta puts the affair behind him, as he later does again when slighted by his father at a family feast. Throughout, Ambau shows us a boy who is perhaps unusually resilient and abundantly forgiving of his father, yet real enough to be mightily challenged in his attempts to forgive his bullying brothers. Desta's strength and tenacity in this first volume will entice many readers to eagerly anticipate the next installment of the young boy's journey and the continuation of his family's saga.

But once the story unfolds as the reader goes through the intricate events of the days.The author being an Ethiopian born, reveals all the intricate cultural, and landscape details without bias or prejudices makes it unique and appealing.It is inspiring, to all African young boys and girls and gives us some optimism, and we will be compelled to admire the determinartion of one young man who succeeds depsite the continued adversity he faced.This book is must read for all NGOs and the aid workers, who may be heading to Ethiopia, or Africa.

I just finished Desta vol.1 & ordered vol.2 I wish I got both at the same time. I want to thank the writer for this beautiful story I laughed , cried & ached with Desta I can't wait to read his journey finding the sun.

My daughter is from Ethiopia and I am reading everything I can get my hands on about the country. I enjoyed this book immensely, but more for insight into the Ethiopian culture than for the story line. I appreciate realistic plots, so toward the end found it a bit ridiculous, however it did intrigue me, and I will purchase the sequel when available.

I was a Peace Corps teacher in Bahar Dar, Ethiopia from 1967 to 1969. Desta is an accurate and beautifully written description of the land, the people, and the culture of that part of Ethiopia where I lived. Reading this book gave me many wonderful memories of my experiences in that very unique country. This book allows you to feel the emotions of the characters, and almost "see" the world in which they live. By all means, read this book and learn about a very different and beautiful people.

A remarkably clear and good read for a more academic than popular history. I learned an enormous amount about a time as fascinating for its differences to the present as its similarities.

Praise has been heaped on Alan Brinkley's book in the past, and after reading it, I fully concur with the accolades that past reviewers have granted to this book.Brinkley sets the tone for his book from the title - "Voices of Protest". He focuses the book on the two main characters (and I do mean characters) present in the subtitle - Huey P. Long and Father Charles E. Couglin.Brinkley treats us to a brief biographical sketch of each of these flamboyant and ebulent personalities. Long in his silk pajamas receiving a German envoy, and Coughlin stripping down from his clerical garb to a sweat soaked politician are just a couple of the many images that grab the reader during the progression of this discourse.After explaining who these men were, he goes into their social & political movements - a fascinating tale of Long's "Share Our Wealth" plan, and an equally rich telling of Coughlin's "Golden Hour of the Little Flower". Brinkley has chosen the title Voices of Protest because both of these movements became major political dissident movements in Depression-era America.Brinkley does a fantastic job of explaining, in historiographic terms, why these movements gathered such steam and were able to become massive social movements rather than just political fodder. In addition to detailing these two major oppositional voices to FDR's new deal, Brinkley also gives us a chapter on other movements that were equally critical of the New Deal, but not nearly as widespread.I found it especially interesting how Brinkley explained that Long was the primary reason why both of these movements flourished - after his assassination in 1935, both movements really seemed to fall apart.I enjoyed this book tremendously - it gives new insight into the way that political dissonance took hold in the 1930's and what a big part of American society these two political movements became.

A fine overview of two largely forgotten but decidedly relevant political demagogues from the 1930s. If you want to get some insight on what drives the politics of populism, this is a good place to begin. If the writing were a bit more refined, I would give it five stars.

On Long and Coughlin this is an essential book.

Really fascinating book. Helps one understand the issues that FDR faced during the depression.

Fabulous look at the father's of American demagoguery!!

Read a narrative history, this is a terrific work on two fascinating individuals. I learned a lot about Coughlin and Long from Brinkley's pages. I didn't appreciate -- or really care about -- the political theory that the author uses at the end of the book. I imagine this evolved from a dissertation so I can understand why it was included, but the book probably would have worked better without it.
