Big Enough Anna is a winner all around. The message is encouraging without being patronizing or syrupy; the illustrations will draw in even children who might think dogs are a little bit scary; and the story itself is full of a sense of daring and adventure and, most of all, the love between the musher/storyteller and her team of sled dogs. A great classroom unit could be built around this book, using the adult/teen version of the same story (Alone Across the Arctic) for additional background info or activity inspiration. (Both books could be read by a teacher in a weekend.) You will fall in love with Anna and all the dogs, and be cheering for them throughout all 3,000 miles of their expedition!

One of my jobs at our local library is to read stories to young children, sometimes also at elementary schools. I recently read this story to the 1st,2nd, 3rd and 4th graders and it received rave reviews. One teacher had each of her students draw a picture of his or her favorite story, and 25 of the 30 drawings were of Anna , the amazingly brave little sled dog. The illustrations were beautiful and large enough for groups of children to see them , while the text had a good amount of drama that held their interest.

I picked this book up at the library for an elementary school where I work that was doing a section on sled dogs and the Iditarod. I liked it so well I bought a copy for my own collection. The story is a great adventure, the illustrations are simple and powerful and children will be fascinated that it is true. I loaned it to a friend who loves dogs and children's books and now she needs her own copy, too.

It is the true story of Pam Flower's sled dog. She told it to our school children when she visited. Wonderful story of bravery!

Love it...

My daughter loves this and the other Pam F. Kids sled dog book! Great art, story, and wonderful role model for young ones.

Good book

This is a book that will delight readers of all ages. Not only are the illustrations masterpieces, the story is as well.Anna is a beautiful husky who is the runt of her litter. She and her littermates train for a 2,500 - 3,000 mile run that will take them an estimated six months. The curly tailed dog and her littermates are followed as they are being trained for the run. Mushers and dogs alike work well together; the bond of cooperation between them is not only strong; it is paramount. The beautiful husky, once dismissed because of her small size proves herself to be up to every challenge during the training and the run. The Little Husky Who Could can take her place with Akiak, another husky who proved her stamina and determination even when her mushers wanted to retire her. An excellent family, classroom and general discussion book, the message can never be shared enough. This wonderful book makes me think of McFadden & Whitehead's 1979 classic, "Ain't No Stopping Us Now" and Matthew Wilder's 1983 hit, "Ain't Nothing Gonna Break My Stride."

Topol makes some interesting points, and I strongly agree with his central argument that patients should be the owners of their own medical data. However, Topol starts his book with a heavy handed straw man argument with his portrayal of modern medicine being shameless paternalistic - this rings false to me and distracts from his main point. Topol seems to very much dislike and distrust doctors despite the fact that he is one himself. He also applies several rare genetic medical conditions to demonstrate his rational for patients making their own medical decisions without the aid of the medical profession - his point would have been much stronger had he used examples of more common medical scenarios. Overall I learned some interesting facts about technologic advancements in medicine and genetics. This was an informative read, but the tone and clear anti doctor bias was somewhat distracting.

This is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand how quickly and dramatically health care is changing. Some would describe Eric Topol as a "futurist", but that suggests he's talking about things 10+ years away. I think of him as a "near-futurist" with a unique ability to synthesize the scientific and cultural trends emerging in different parts of the health care system, to help us see how it's about to come together. As a physician, I find this scary and exciting. As a patient, family caregiver, and advocate, I'm thrilled. The Patient Will See You Now takes us on a wonderfully written tour including: the end of paternalism in health care (hooray!), tools that patients and families now have to be partners in their care, and an approachable overview to how genomics is finally bringing us personalized medicine. That last piece is even more important to understand given Obama's recent proposal to sequence 1 million genomes.Whether you think all of these changes are good or not, Topol's work here is a huge amount of easy-to-understand education, impeccably researched, and a pleasure to read.

Topol's earlier book - The Creative Destruction of Medicine: How the Digital Revolution Will Create Better Health Care discussed quantified-self, and aspects of the app-centric health data logging and analyses and concluded that mHealth will form the basis of healthcare disruption. In this book, Topol provides a very interesting thought framework to deduce "what's next?"The first section expands his assertion that paternalistic healthcare systems (personified by FDA, AMA, and traditionalists) is really behind the times and the notion "nothing about me without me" is increasingly becoming not only feasible but also demanded by the patients. Providing a detour explaining the evolution of interpretations of the Hippocrates oath, Topol uses that opportunity to take issue (yet again) with the AMA and the entire practice around guidelines. While arguing for increased access for patient-related information to the patients, Topol clearly acknowledges the difference in information and knowledge gaps and points out that mere access is not sufficient, but it is a critical step in rethinking patient engagement and direct participation. To further expand on these themes, Topol borrows Eisentien's characterization of printing press as a change agent and draws significant parallels with that transformation and smartphones, calling this the "Gutenberg moment". While a healthy skepticism is warranted in the claims of everything from holy wars to Renaissance to modern science and founding of american republic is attributed directly to the printing press, one cannot easily dismiss the "combinatorial intellectual activity" printing facilitated. Topol argues (successfully) further that the technology already exists to enable this remarkable period of creativity in healthcare. Using relatively recent episodes such as FDA v/s 23andme and Angelina Jolie's aggressive preventive measures, Topol provides a very informative and engaging view of how the healthcare system is clearly at an inflection point. In the second section, Topol focuses primarily on the key enabling technologies that will make his vision of a democratized and personalized healthcare a reality. Moving beyond traditional logging devices, Topol paints a realistic vision of the technologies and the opportunities they are already creating such as from lab-on-a-chip to lab-in-body. Along the way, his insights on the failures of EMR systems (using OpenNotes as a contrast), potential of "pre-womb to tomb" predictive/diagnostic models is well worth the read. In fact, the chapter on the various -omics and their potential role (adapted from his famous paper in Cell) and examples on pre-diabetic and airway diseases in itself is worthy of investing in this book. A reader will also gain significant insights about some trailblazing companies like Theranos, QuantuMDx, etc. The discussion around how 3 of the 5 imaging technologies have already been miniaturized to hand-held devices is a clear indication of the realism embedded in Topol's assertions. In the third section, Topol objectively analyses the import of these changes (cultural and technological) on how healthcare will be delivered and consumed. These discussions go beyond "disintermediation of doctors" and is a must-read for anyone interested in developing new service models. A few years ago, The Innovator's Prescription: A Disruptive Solution for Health Care, provided a radically new way to rethink service models - Topol's book does the same from the viewpoint of patient and the role of technology. At times, Topol perhaps extends the patient advocacy too aggressively. For example, on a discussion crucifying Myriad and value of patents, he seem to dismiss the risk taken by private enterprises to generate these insights. While he fully acknowledges that information and knowledge gaps are critical, he uses a few hand-picked examples of how highly motivated individuals were able to be remarkably active with the diagnosis and treatment of their conditions (it is hard to say how generalizable these episodes are). Criticisms on AMA may also not be entirely fair and while there will always be "eminence-based medicine" as Topol characterizes it, there is no doubt that some of it needs to be modulated better with patient-centric approaches. With the clarity of discussion aided by well-chosen examples and analogies bereft of needless cheer-leading, over 50 pages of notes/references, excellent diagrams accompanying some of the key concepts, Topol's book is well-poised to define the next big discussion on healthcare. With the aggressive growth of wearables and smartphones showing no signs of slowing down, wider acknowledgement of patient participation as key for healthcare outcomes, changing delivery models such as ACOs in the US, some of Topol's vision may become reality sooner than even he seem to hope for. Nevertheless, Topol has succeeded in providing a clear thought framework to assess and harness the role of mobile technology in reshaping healthcare ecosystems.

Dr Topol has a vision of the future of healthcare that is probably as good as futurist ever are. Most of the time the future is not what is imagined. That should not stop anyone from trying! He sees the demise of the general hospital as we know it and more DIY medicine with the smartphone as the hub of wonderful new sensors will give ICU monitoring at home. All this would be very good if sick people were still able to always think clearly and follow their best interests. I do think he underplays to role of greed in the health care system, but my crystal ball was cracked in an unforeseen accident. This book is well researched and written.

This book aligns well with my approach to all medical services that each of us experience with the medical system here in the United States. For years I have seen myself as a "customer", not a patient and as a customer I have the same rights and requirements from the medical establish that I have with say a repair shop and repairs to my automobile.I have been over "well, the doctor said so" fairy tail for years now and any doctor that refuses to allow "my" participation in my own health care gets fired. This book lays out much of the truth of how we got in this predicament and speaks to where this is all headed.Fine reading if you have any idea of what really drives the medical establishments in the US.

When I took Pastor Kent's class and learned to minister using the bridge diagram four years ago, one of the assignments was to practice. At the time we had a family living with us and I sensed the spirit encouraging me to share with the 22 year old son. He acknowledged that he was a believer as I fulfilled my assignment. Little did I know that he would be dead less than a month later due to a tragic motorcycle accident. Pastor Kent is one of the most kind, loving, and humble men I have ever met, yet when it comes to sharing his faith, he is bold and intentional. Pastor Kent is a one on one evangelist, and he shares that experience and many testimonies in this book. He teaches how to find out when people are ready and makes it easy to lead people to Jesus. You will get to partner with God in an honoring way as you equip yourself with the perspective and tools of my friend Kent Tucker.

Perfect diagram to bring people to Christ, easy to learn and use when witnessing.

Being a Christian is all about me sharing my relationship with Jesus. How, why, what I do to get closer to the Lord. This book details how to in a non threatening way that anyone can understand.

"If the gathering, storage, and processing of information puts us all in the center of a digital panopticon, the failure to forget creates a panopticon crossbred with a time-travel machine. Mayer-Schönberger catalogs the range of social concerns that are arising as technology favors remembering over forgetting, and offers some approaches that might give forgetting a respected place in the digital world. Read this book. Don't forget about forgetting."--David Clark, Massachusetts Institute of Technology"Delete is, ironically, a book you will not forget. It provides a sweeping but well-balanced account of the challenges we face in a world where our digital traces are saved for life. These issues transcend just issues of privacy but go to the heart of how our society and we as individuals function, remember, and learn. I highly recommend this most informative and delightful book."--John Seely Brown, University of Southern California, coauthor of The Social Life of Information"An erudite and wide-reaching account of the role that forgetting has played in history--and how forgetting became an exception due to digital technology and global networks. Mayer-Schönberger vividly depicts the legal, social, and cultural implications of a world that no longer remembers how to forget. Delete deserves the broadest possible readership."--Paul M. Schwartz, Berkeley School of Law"In a work of extraordinary breadth and erudition, Viktor Mayer-Schönberger broadens the 'privacy' debate to encompass the dimension of time. His concept of 'digital forgetting' reshapes how sociologists, technologists, and policymakers must define and protect individual autonomy as technology usurps the prerogatives of human memory."--Philip Evans, Boston Consulting Group"Human society has taken for granted the fact of forgetting. Technology has made us less able to forget, and this change, as Mayer-Schönberger nicely demonstrates, will have a profound effect on society. We as a culture must think carefully and strategically about this incredibly significant problem. Delete will spark a debate we need to have."--Lawrence Lessig, author of Remix: Making Art and Commerce Thrive in the Hybrid Economy"Delete is a refreshingly philosophical take on the new dilemmas created by extensive digital documentation of our daily lives. Mayer-Schönberger's background in business and technology leads him to a creative and novel response to the challenges generated by persistent storage of data. Delete is a valuable contribution."--Frank Pasquale, Seton Hall Law School

With Delete, Viktor Mayer-Schönberger utilizes historical, philosophical, theoretical, and practical considerations to formulate a compelling insight: For the majority of human existence, he says, remembering has been harder than forgetting; our "external analog memory" (books, film, tape) has been degradable, difficult to store, and sometimes economically inaccessible. Accordingly, our acceptance of the fact that most things would, indeed, be forgotten "helped us humans avoid the fundamental question of whether we would like to remember everything forever if we could" (36). It allowed us to live in the present, and not tethered to the past. But with the emergence of an "external digital memory" -- through the Internet and other technological metadata -- we are confronted with a new paradigm of personal and cultural memory that is, as Mayer-Schönberger says, "lossless, cheap, and easy." We are now being confronted with a future in which everything will be remembered forever, and we are being taken to this fate unwillingly.Mayer-Schönberger's premise is certainly well-supported. Delete offers a rigorous exposition of memory as a cultural virtue in Greek philosophy and traces its evolving role to the invention of writing (as a form of external memory) and reading (as a form of shared, or social memory), while complicating its position in culture by acknowledging the socioeconomic challenges that obstruct an even distribution of these mediums -- and, in effect, an even distribution of power. The way Mayer-Schönberger establishes the intervention of digital culture is also particularly helpful; our understanding of the Internet as a source of unfailing, perpetual memory is powerfully illustrated by case studies in which entire lives have been derailed by a "drunk pirate" photo on MySpace. But whereas such a premise is, in itself, a fascinating take on our modern situation, Delete fails to live up to its promise for a potential resolution. In fact, by the end of the book, Mayer-Schönberger's entire tone shifts from insightfully theoretical to simplistically resigned.Spoiler alert, then: Mayer-Schönberger would like to see an Internet (and a tech world) that offers opt-out "expiration dates" for the information we collect and upload. He wants to see an Internet (and a tech world) that respects individual agency, and can come to embrace the forgotten virtue of forgetting.Of course, this type of conclusion rests on vaguely unrealistic assumptions -- that we all share the same values when it comes to sharing digitally, for example, or that tech companies will put privacy and digital memory issues ahead of their product -- and Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, for one, is clearly not interested in Mayer-Schönberger's business plan. At a public speaking engagement held earlier this year at Stanford University, Zuckerberg said, "We expect this rate [of sharing] will double every 10 years. So in 10 years from now, people will be sharing about 1,000 times as many things as they do today." In other words, the largest social networking site in the world wants us to share more longer, and Facebook is, by design, positioned to become our digital memory monolith.Interestingly, what Mayer-Schönberger fails to consider is that as this new paradigm of perpetual memory establishes itself, culture will likely respond with a further evolved notion of memory and its significance. Today, a teacher will be fired for her drunk-pirate photo, but in the future, as the Internet continues to collect our digital histories -- lossless, cheap, and easy -- few will be spared from their own embarrassing memories. One day, we will have a President with his or her own drunk-pirate photo on Facebook, and although we'll still laugh, we'll have evolved to care less.

In this interesting but not always persuasive book, lawyer and policy analyst Viktor Mayer-Schonberger asserts that being able to forget stuff is a requirement for human social evolution. For anyone who misplaces his spectacles or keys, this may seem surprising, but Mayer-Schonberger makes the case for it in at least some aspects of daily life. He concentrates on old resentments, which may cripple us if brooded over too long.Maybe. Further, he claims that the digital revolution has made it impossible for us to usefully forget. He presents a couple of examples: One is a Canadian psychologist who wrote a research paper in a journal mentioning his use of LSD in the '60s. American immigration officials, using Internet search, matched his name and - declaring him to be a dangerous drug user - denied him entrance. This seems to me less a problem of too much remembering than of too stupid governors, but Mayer-Schonberger does explain in great detail about how much information the combination of digital speed and cheap memory can store. And even create, by data mining. It doesn't have to be information you put on the Internet, either. Insurance companies routinely get records of most of the prescriptions pharmacies sell, and they can reconstruct much of your medical history - a history that is otherwise legally supposed to be private. This part is plenty scary, whether there is a problem with not forgetting or not.Mayer-Schonberger then leads us through various legal and technical fixes to the problem of too much memory too long. The Europeans have taken a hard-line view of privacy. This leads to absurd results: German universities are not allowed to reveal who they have awarded degrees to.This much of "Delete" is must reading, unless you've lived in a cave the past 20 years. The remainder, the frankly controversial part of "Delete," is only interesting if Mayer-Schonberger has already persuaded you that not forgetting is a problem. He proposes, as a partial and initial defense, a policy of sunsetting or expiring digital data. This is problematic. He uses the example of yesterday's newspaper. However, the uselessness of yesterday's paper resides in the fact that we have not yet had time to forget what was in it. A copy of a 100-year-old paper is worth more now than it was when fresh.Imagine how useful it would be socially if 150 years ago the whole world had had as many newspapers as America or Europe, and if they had published daily temperatures. We could save billions in trying to reconstruct past climate and maybe trillions if the result showed that global warming has been overstated.Similarly, in the United States, we consign census data to only temporary oblivion, keeping it secret for decades but then throwing it open for research useful to both sociologists and geneaologists. So there is a throwing-the-baby-out-with-the-bathwater aspect to Mayer-Schonberger's solution. Also, we now know that when we call up memories, we distort them when we restore them to our brains. Elizabeth Loftus demonstrated this conclusively 40 years ago (her book "Eyewitness" ought to be read by every person called to jury duty), but Mayer-Schonberger does not mention her. He does refer to a Harvard colleague who has made similar studies more recently, but they seem not to care about such things as accuracy of testimony about past events. It may be well to forget past insults but then again, maybe not.Mayer-Schonberger writes, "Forgetting is at least in part a constructive process of filtering information based on relevance."Whether that's a bug or a feature depends on circumstances.

I've only read through the last 3 chapters, but what I've read I've really enjoyed. I've been out of the clinical world for 10 years homeschooling my kids during numerous army moves with my hubby. This was just the book to refresh myself. It's easy to read and the numerous charts and figures nicely break up the potential monotony of a typical text book. They make it easy to do a quick search for important issues. It's user friendly to the eyes.

THE BEST RESOURCE FOR A RD! This is the MNT Bible. Would have been so great during internship. Use it frequently in acute care hospital.

I was first introduced to this book in the late 1990’s (unable to recall edition number), as an acute care dietitian, & I quickly added it to my library. I have since enthusiastically shared this book with my new nutrition colleagues & dietetic interns. I believe I might have even influenced a NC nutrition program to include it in their curriculum? I’m now working as an outpatient dietitian & this book continues to be an outstanding resource. It is my entire nutrition education in a single book.

Great format, pictures, diagrams, and easy to read! I wish this was required in my undergrad, now I purchased for my upcoming RD internship because of the good reviews. Content is 5 stars but I do wish it was hardcover since it is textbook size and I have already damaged the cover with moderate use. I might try to laminate the covers to add some reinforcement.

This and any book by this author is excellent. I've used this as an almost daily reference in many different positions in the Nutrition field over the years. It does exactly what it promises. Each diagnosisis presented with thorough consideration of clinical picture, labs, nutrition care plan, alternative medicine, patient needs and appropriate approach to treatment. It serves as a great checklist for any diagnosis. In doing so, it assists each RDN in providing thorough, accurate care. This author is a nutrition expert with an excellent , organized, understandable, practical resource which belongs in every RDN's well worn resource file.Thank you,

One of my all-time favorite references. Glad they keep updating it to ensure info is up to date. Perfect for those needing a desk reference if working in a clinical environment with diversity of diagnosis. Helps you ensure you don't forget any of the possible ways to help patients. LOVE this book.

An AWESOME book! and very helpful. I am doing my Dietetic Internship and it was recommended to me! It is WONDERFUL for anyone in dietetics!

Used this for my dietetic internship. Great information to help educate during the internship and helped prepare me for the RD exam.
