About the Author

Hal Fulton first began using Ruby in 1999. In 2001, he started work on The Ruby Way, which was the second Ruby book published in English. Fulton was an attendee at the very first Ruby conference in 2001 and has presented at numerous other Ruby conferences on three continents, including the first European Ruby Conference in 2003. He holds two degrees in computer science from the University of Mississippi and taught computer science for four years. He has worked for more than 25 years with various forms of UNIX and Linux. He is now at Simpli.fi in Fort Worth, Texas, where he works primarily in Ruby.   André Arko first encountered Ruby as a student in 2004, and reading the first edition of this book helped him decide to pursue a career as a Ruby programmer. He is team lead of Bundler, the Ruby dependency manager, and has created or contributes to dozens of other open source projects. He works at Cloud City Development as a consultant providing team training and expertise on Ruby and Rails as well as developing web applications.   André enjoys sharing hard-won knowledge and experience with other developers, and has spoken at over a dozen Ruby conferences on four continents. He is a regular volunteer at RailsBridge and RailsGirls programming outreach events, and works to increase diversity and inclusiveness in both the Ruby community and technology as a field. I've cherished my old dog-eared 2nd edition (pub. 2006) of The Ruby Way for many years now, but had typically withheld my recommendation of the book to new(er) Rubyists because the old editions left off with v1.8, possibly leaving more than a few new-to-coding folks a bit befuddled about comparatively minor version-dependencies and related issues.So, I was overjoyed to find this new 3rd edition, fully updated to Ruby v2.x! When my copy arrived, I was further elated to find that Fulton, together with his current co-author, André Arko, have taken the time and effort to fully update the book's content and organization -- far from "just a few tweaks" to justify cashing in on another edition, this new 3rd edition of The Ruby Way provides thoughtful, timely and relevant content, faithful to the style, purpose and quality of the earlier editions, but even better in so many ways.As an example, the authors' presentation of the basic issues of "Internationalization in Ruby" (comprising chapter 4) is one of the best expositions of, or about, this complex topic. Fulton and Arko neatly summarize the essential problem, provide the motivation for why-do-it, introduce several approaches to multi-language design, and neatly highlight the basic Ruby approach and tools for implementing I18N in a project or product. This chapter alone is worth the price of this edition.Other strong and valuable chapters include the ones on regexes (chapter 3), working with date and time data (chapter 7), enumerables and other advanced data structures (chapters 8, 9 and 10), a practical overview of GUI toolkits for Ruby (12), a great getting-started chapter on scripting and sys-admin with Ruby (14)... Well, there's really not a dud in the whole book.With the earlier editions, Fulton emphasized that The Ruby Way was never intended to be a Ruby language primer or beginner's/learner's training guide; instead the focus was (and remains) on language idiom, best practices, and practical guidance on the application of Ruby to problems both generic and specific. In this, I think he and Arko have succeeded again -- other reviewers generally and enthusiastically agree with this. And now that this new, updated edition of The Ruby Way is available, it goes back on my own list of the top-essential books about Ruby. Warmly recommended to anyone interested in this great language.

The first edition of this book helped me learn Ruby back in 2003. Since then I have picked up both the second and third editions which have evolved to cover both changes to the language and best practices in coding. An absolute must for any newcomer to the Ruby language.

A wonderful book.I've been studying Ruby for one year and half and this book was the best I found so far.I started reading this series at the second edition and was one of those lectures that really pleased me.The author gives a complete view of the Ruby programming languages, and makes us see how to use it the way it was designed for.

The book covers a wide range of aspects of the language in a well-organized and logical manner. Each chapter gives explanations and examples of how to perform particular operations, but the real value is in how the explanations cover the "why" as well as the "how".

I am learning Ruby and this book is one of the pair suggested for Ruby students (who are not otherwise beginners). I have also purchased the other one, which is now being shipped. The other one is Programming Ruby, which is also available on Amazon.Ruby may well prove to be right up my alley, since I have worked with extensible software (two meta-assembles, one for the Univac 1107 and one I wrote myself -- PLASM and also a compiler generator from a BNF language description.).

This DK Eyewitness Books: Ancient Greece, like the new DK series of books on Ancient Rome and Ancient Egypt, is not an heirloom quality product as are the older bound version, this new format being more akin to a cheap Life Magazine level of product and disappointing. Some of the type (font) size is geared for books on the order of "see dick, see dick run". The index from my perspective is abbreviated. The entire product being a step backwards towards low performance expectation from publisher to intended child with the focus being on self esteem, thus low level content structured for the lowest common denominator rather than a product that challenges or inspires a pursuit for excellence by a 10-12 year old child. A child that at such age should be far more articulate than suggested by the marginal content enclosed in this cost reduction exercise of a publication. I recommend parents to skip this new product in favor of the old bound text edition or more substantive. As a point of reference, and not that far from my peers of the time, that by the age of 10 I was reading Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, by 13 Voltaire, by 14 Man and His Gods by Homer Smith along with the Naked Ape by Desmond Morris. I hope those reading this review are experiencing a similar level of development with their child and if not, why not? Overall it has a ton of information-- I wanted something to introduce Greece to my son before our trip there. I wish there was more 'stories' about mythology as that was in the description, but its much more about places/history that is a bit much for a younger kid.

You can never go wrong with Eyewitness books, and the Ancient Greece volume is no exception. My elementary aged son has really enjoyed looking through the pages and finds something new each time he reads it. Great addition to your children's home library!

The illustrations as per usual are all a feast for the eyes and give you a visual understanding of daily art, architecture artefacts and the people. There may be a myriad of books out there that are written on Ancient Greece this book however is so visual that you feel as though like the mythical creatures themselves of Ancient Greece you can step inside and, can experience been amongst them all that time which in the end of course is naturally a vividly extraordinary experience to be a part of emotionally and educationally in been a fantasy world of mythology.

Though the product was excellent, it used graphics which were inappropriate for the age of the intended user, so it was returned. Amazon cared for the return with their normal excellence! Thank you.

About the Author

Jeffrey F. If you are have this textbook for your business law class, then you are in luck! This is one of the best and most helpful textbooks that I have ever had the pleasure of using. (I mostly just use my textbooks as a pillow). I actually did enjoy reading this and learning the material. The author breaks down the concepts so they are easy to understand. Even if you hate law, if you put forth the effort to learn this, you should have no trouble at all learning and understanding the concepts. Whether or not the class will be easy is another thing.I enjoyed this book so much that I will not be selling it back to the bookstore (or anyone) because I know that I will use the book for years.

I had to buy this book for a class... I am not in the market to buy law books and read through them for fun. It was very expensive but it was required for the class. As law books go this one isn't bad. The authors actually try to put it in a language that students can understand and they even add in a little quip every once in a while. I am accounting major and this is the only law book I have had to buy but I imagine not very many of them are as easy to understand as this one. (I know none of my accounting books were) I don't know how many people will actually be looking to buy this for recreational reading but if you do I think it will probably be entertaining for you. If you are required to buy it like I was then don't be TO disappointed. I suppose it could be worse...

I somehow got the instructor's edition for this book, maybe I read the product description wrong. Great book if you want to learn something, I honestly felt this book helped me more rather than my teacher.

Paid almost $300 on this book, I have had it for a month and a half and both the front and back of the book cover are coming off. I haven't done any excessive opening and I don't put anything in my book that would cause it to rip the covers off. Very disappointed, should have just bought it somewhere else.

This is a really easy to understand Business Law text. I have very little experience with Business Law, and have had no issues understanding this text. It is a simple read, but has a lot of good, relevant information.

This book does a great job of providing all of the necessary information to cover each topic without becoming redundant. While it is not the most exciting read, it is easy to get through.

I'm a law geek. This book is a great first-law-class. I'm done with the class but I'm keeping the book because I loved the class so much.

I needed this book for a masters class. I decided on the paperback to save money. It was not clear that when you purchase the paperback you are only getting "selected chapters". I received the book and had to turn around and purchase another one because it did not include half the chapters I needed to read for class. The only way to know would be to click on the picture and zoom in to read the small print under the title.

A"smoking" book. It is poignant w/out being redundant w/ old scoldings. Refreshingly inviting to admit the solution is not easy, but offers a well secured path. Title sounds more graphic to some than read is. Loved the supplement section and diversions. Cranshaw has been right there with us.

The thing that I enjoyed the most about this book, and what separates it from other quit-smoking related sources I’ve come across, is the fact that the author presents the information in a very straightforward, no-BS kind of way. Caroline Cranshaw doesn’t waste time beating around the bush and instead focuses on getting right to the point in an honest and direct way. Anyone that’s tried to quit before will know how hard it truly and will be aware of the kind of dedication it costs, the author is clearly not ignorant to this fact and it shows through the refreshing style of writing that doesn’t rely on babying the reader or hand-holding whatsoever. This is the type of book for people who are truly ready to kick their smoking in the butt and take initiative far from a mindset based on excuses and “I’ll start tomorrow” thoughts. Definitely recommend it.

I bought this because I already take some supplements, and wanted to see the recommendations for supplementation that are in this book. I am taking pretty much everything she recommends, with a couple of useful exceptions. And I like her exercises. It's a useful book, and down to earth. The author is very transparent about her own struggles and her language is accessible and understandable. The book is really helpful in terms of why addictions are so hard to kick (at many levels, including some that were new to me), why they're not merely an issue of will power, and how to nurture, not judge, oneself when trying to make positive change.

I have tried to quit smoking many times and never made past a few days. With the help of this book and the supplements they recommended I have now been smoke free for 4 months. The book is funny and had none of the bs about quitting with no withdrawals that some other books did. I used the chewable vitamin c and found it to be super helpful for in the car. I did the exercises that were recommended even though they may seem a little silly. Try it!

I love this book. She is so real- and so relatable. Everything she says feels like common sense with a dose of laughter- which diffuses the fear. Fear seems to be the reason people stay addicted. There are no scare tactics, great coping mechanisms and ways to diffuse the cravings until they go away. Because you have control over how you feel- and because really life is just about feeling good :)HIGHLY recommend and just gifted to my Dad for an early holiday gift!

Backstory : I received this Kindle edition a few days ago and just reviewed the book page by page just now. Over the years I have read all THE books by THE authors/experts about how to quit smoking. Like the author I have stopped and then returned to the practice/addiction that was so familiar. I have tried various techniques (including NRT) in addition to reading THOSE other how to books that promised to help me stop in spite of myself. I received some help and benefit from those other tools but it didn't last - I ended up returning to the known familiar problem.The Smoking Cure : Thank You Caroline Cranshaw! I almost decided against buying this but now I am SOoooo glad I did. I am now interested and motivated to make a committment to stop again. This person has lived what she talks about as a former tobacco user. She covers the "we all know that" information in non technical language. I am the sort of person who doesn't need to know the scientific research on a topic - I just want to learn "how" to do it! She has written this book as if she was running a workshop for a general audience. I felt as if she could have been my next door neighbor who just happens to know how to write for publication. If you identify with any of these descriptions then I would recommend you give this author's book a read : 1) You don't want to be "scared" into stopping but also want to accept the reality of this problem, 2) You want to know about the whole experience from getting started to doing it to what happens afterward AND how to make each step of the experience a step in the right direction, and 3) You would like to get all this information in one place so you can focus and know you have the tools you need even if you never look for more information. Ever. This book is the tutorial you need. It is well written, consistent, and she devotes about the same amount of space to each topic involved without leaving out any important concepts or suggestions. I am so impressed with the overall quality of this book and I will come back with an update about the results. I'm actually looking forward to stopping again knowing I have this book to use for support and encouragement!

Enjoyable methods used to beat the cravings. The vitamin supplements section was informative. This book offers a plethora of information to assist on the journey of becoming a non-smoker.

I was uncertain if I would be able top quit smoking. This book gave me the confidence and help I needed. I highly recommend it.

My review at the bottom but.....please do not review if.....- you did not enjoy the book because your Spanish is not that great (why give it a bad review for your lack of language skills?)- You did not enjoy the book because it was too confusing (it's complex, not confusing, was Shakespeare a bad writer for his complexity?)- ***If you found it too "depressing" and "dark"*** (Any book who makes you "feel" deep emotions accomplished a rare thing, if you felt depressed, well that's personal, very personal.This book is taught in many universities and given to people who are just learning Spanish, why??It must be read by someone who can understand Spanish fluently and more...I recommend first buying it in English if your Spanish vocabulary is too narrow.******This is simply a MASTERPIECE, one that doesn't fade in time, history or between cultures,such a masterpiece that even the grand Gabriel Garcia Marquez from "100 years of solitude" knew the bookby memory (it's a small novel) and said after reading it he had such powerful emotions that he had only encountered very few times in his life.This novel will make you feel you are hanging through time and space, and gets you inside the minds of the deceased who still mourn their religious sins, imposed by the Catholic church. Yes, it is dark, and can be as some say "depressing"..... but I call it deep and magical, and remember that Mexican people do not view death as other cultures do.This novel sends you to old Mexico, the torn one, where people are jailed between time and space (how he accomplishes this, amazing!), between religion and freedom, between poverty and wealth.The time of this novel is set during either the Mexican revolution or "the Cristero War"What it is clear is that this novel is set during the times in Mexico where "Hacendados" (Landowners) who lived in "Haciendas" controlled entire towns (Very similar to the FEUDAL and SERF times in Europe)Here Juan Rulfo gets deep into the conscious and the sub-conscious mind of the people from such towns, you get into the minds and hearts of the deceased who still mourn their sins.It is one of those novels that sticks to you for a long time, often without conclusion, it makes you "feel" but nothing is concrete.It is powerful, mysterious, humorously dark and very real.Attached is some the photography by Juan Rulfo, as I feel it depicts his only written novel as well......

I bought this book because I am learning Spanish. I also bought the English translation. I saw one review that said that this is written in old Spanish which I think may be true. I am still not 100 percent fluent, but this book seems to be harder to read than more modern material. However I think that this has been helpful by pushing me harder. I do wish that I had bought one of the versions on the Kindle as it is hard to read between two actual books. The story is a great read and although I can easily comprehend the English version I like the Spanish version better, it seems to be somhow more impactful.

I read this book because I had read in an article that it was one of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's favorites and that he had memorized the whole book!I was fascinated by the first half of the book and couldn't put it down. Not a word was wasted. The characters and landscape so well described and the magical quality/experiences/scenes so well integrated into the narrative that it was perfectly believable. I would recommend reading it simply for this first part alone.However, I was less satisfied with the second part. It felt a bit too gloomy, dark, unbelievable to me. The "magic" was less... magical. If it had not been so short, I would likely have not finished it.That being said, I would read the first part again for its unique rendering of hope and anticipation and magic.

Muy buen libro, bastante perturbador pero a la vez inspirante a ser agradecido por las muchas cosas que han cambiado a travez de los años.

The only book I ever read, that the minute I finished it, I started it over again. Yes, I read it twice in one day. It reminds me of the movie, The Sixth Sense(only spookier the whole way through), in that when you finish it, you can't believe how it comes out, so you have to experience it all over again, to make sure you aren't losing your sense of how reality fits together.

This title was recommended to me by a Spanish speaking friend, so I bought this English version. My gut says there is a lot of loss in translation AND/OR the person who translated it was not a native Spanish speaker. I expected fragmented writing, lack of plot, etc. but there were parts that simply didn't make sense in English at all, and I think those are the areas in which Spanish probably more elegantly illustrates the existentialist tone of the story.
