I am torn on how I ultimately feel about this book because it was required for a class in a PhD program. The book itself is not one that I would have normally purchased because a lot of the information is taught or easily accessible in other resources. However, since it is required for the course we have to read it out of order which might be why I felt that it was a waste of the book. The book is published outside of the US and refers to sites or resources that are not ones that would normally be referenced in a US based course. Obviously, this also means that some words are spelled different and may be used in a context that someone from the US may not recognize. If you have never had to "review" literature then this is a great book to have. If, however, you have already had a few classes that required reviews and have covered it extensively, then this is not the best book for you. There are also some parts in this that are rather vague and could have been expanded on a little more. As an overview, though, they cover a lot and this book is a good beginner book.

I had been working on my darn lit review for a few months, spinning my wheels and not knowing exactly what to write. This book takes you from the beginning and the title says it best "step-by-step". The first chapter talks about what is a lit review and many different examples of published lit reviews from dissertations. Then it goes into the types and you can figure out which lit review is best for you, or a combination of approaches. It tells you how to take good notes while you're studying so that you know exactly what to put in the review and as a bonus for me, it shows you how to incorporate EndNote in your search. Then it explains how to structure the review, the difference between critical reading and critical writing, etc etc etc. This author has found the perfect middle ground between sounding too simple and too complex. If I had this book months ago, my dissertation would probably be complete by now. I also bought Chris Hart's book "Doing a Literature Review" but this one is much better. Very easy to read but packed with extremely helpful information. Get this if you've never done a lit review before and need guidance.

Bought this for an online university class requiring a literature review. Though I did not study every single word in the book, it helped me organize the major sections of my paper and understand what was expected of me.

I used this book for a Graduate Level Course. The book will help clear up and clarify all the questions you ever had about the literature review. A good book to have for your academic journey.

love it

Excellent text with great tips. A must read if you're a PhD student!

Review

"Much of the training in contemporary academic ateliers focuses on understanding and interpreting what you see in front of you. At the moment, there's a growing interest in supplementing those skills with the training of memory and imagination . . . [Mr. Rousar's]Â book is thoughtfully and clearly written, and will benefit both teachers and students interested in improving their powers of memory."-James Gurney, Artist and author

From the Author

Why should an artist bother to train their visual memory, and what does that even mean? Can't I just paint what's in front of me, or from a photograph, or from my imagination? These are the kinds of questions I get from students when I bring up the subject of memory drawing. The simple answer is, of course you can. However, having a well-developed visual memory can be of immense help to your from-life work as well as when working from your imagination.Whether the end-goal is drawing, painting or sculpting directly from life or from your memory, memory drawing begins with an intentional effort to visually observe the subject. How well the subject is remembered is directly related to how well it is observed. In other words, artists need to become expert observers in order to have exceptional visual memories. This is true for many fields and very often the memory skill of experts is geared towards their expertise. In a sense, they expect to see what they are trained to see. They look for it.As the subtitle of the book alludes to, this book is as much about learning to perceive what you see as it is about memory drawing.Memory Drawing: Perceptual Training and Recall more fully answers the above questions and provides a curriculum for training your abilities to visually perceive and training your visual memory.

The author does seem to have a slight bias toward a non-constructive approach to perception and drawing; but he still manages to keep the recommendations in this book fairly balanced. He certainly doesn't say that the perceptual and memory training advocated in the book is the end-all-be-all for every artist. Rather, he suggests that this kind of training is useful to artists with widely varying goals and approaches, which seems likely to be the case. The book is clearly written, and it includes both background material and lots of actual exercises along with the pictures required for them, and suggestions for creating your own exercises when you are finished with his. For all that, it's also not a very long book. Definitely a keeper.

It is always amazing to look at the grand art of the past - landscapes, cityscapes, figures in motion, genre scenes - and realize that artists of the past had no cameras to capture what lay before them. Rather they remembered. Yes, they often made quick on the scenes sketches, but then returned to their studios and used their recall of what they observed to flesh out their work. Today the skill of drawing from memory isn't given the emphasis it once was, in many ways handicapping artists who wish to better paint what they see or have seen. While today's emphasis on self expression seems to negate the need to remember what one sees and instead focus on what one feels, inspiration often comes from without....the way light and shadow play upon a group of trees, the texture of an abandoned object, the reflections on a window of a house by the sea. This book attempts to help artists to remember what they see, and then use that memory to make art that captures the reality of what was seen or the artist's particular view of what was before him or her. To do so a review of memory training is offered, along with excersizes. While the rapid presentation of images around us these days on TV or through films and videos teaches us all to be passive receivers of sensory information, artists can benefit from learning better to recall stimuli that attract them. This book can help do that.

What a loss to both to art & society that we are not all taught this in school as children. Finally a modern well written guide to visual memory & visualization training that is not based upon intangible methods like meditation but practical art instruction.

A great practice for artists and those wanting to develop their visual memory

Very sensible and helpful advice

There is no question that artists of the past used memory training as a means of study. The author clearly shows the historical and contemporary value of training one's visual memory and clearly explains the benefit to the serious student. Misunderstanding the purpose for memory training leads to a poorly reasoned attitude toward the practice. From the writings of Degas to Boisbaudran, training the visual memory is extolled and in Rousar's book both the importance of the practice historically and its practical use today are well defined.

It was a good book, but maybe not exactly what my daughter wanted.

If you are interested in improving your art, either drawing or painting, this is not the book that will do it. The author's premise is that memories of what you have seen are more important than actually, for instance, drawing from a model. If you are interested in making figures that are lifelike and compelling, then I doubt you will learn anything from this book. All the proof you need of how not to make great art is to go to the author's website and see his work. It does indeed look like someone who is drawing from memory. The figures look like mannequins, completely lifeless. They look like symbols for people rather than individuals. It's also not exactly a demanding read - I read it in one afternoon. It was given to me by a friend who said she no longer wanted it. She was right.

The Last Trial is the third book in the McMurtrie and Drake legal thriller series.Thomas Jackson McMurtrie is an attorney who spent several decades as a Professor of Evidence at the University of Alabama School of Law and who wrote the definitive textbook on Evidence for the State of Alabama. Then one or two of his former students turned on him and he was dismissed from the faculty of the law school.Once he was discharged, he returned to the practice of law with a former student, Rick Drake. They have had quite a bit of success as well as some close calls (be sure and read The Professor (book 1) and Between Black and White (book 2)) in that order. The Professor is in his 70s and about 28 months earlier had been successfully treated for bladder cancer.Because of his health issues and his age, he is encouraged to leave this case alone, especially since his partner has not worked for several months. After Wilma Newton is arrested, her 14 year-old daughter comes to see McMurtrie to ask him to represent her mother. Contrary to the advice of his family and friends, including the District Attorney and his investigator who are old friends of both McMurtrie and Drake, he cannot deny the child’s request.Shortly after undertaking representation of the “murder suspect,” Tom is walking his bulldog, Roy Lee, when the dog lunged for a squirrel, causing pain in Tom’s back. Believing he has a “slipped disc,” Tom refuses to see a doctor, even though his friend, who is a doctor, and his oncologist, have encouraged him to do so.Now a man from previous books, Jack Willistone, who was released from prison on May 8, 2012, has turned up dead, on May 9, 2012, on the banks of the Black Warrior River. Willistone is the father of an adult son with such severe autism who resides in a special facility, the son-in-law of the reputed “mob boss” of Alabama, and the insured on a $3,000,000.00 policy of life insurance. His wife is sole beneficiary.A gun registered to Ms. Newton, who spent a year in prison on prostitution charges arising from her relationship with the dead man, and which has only her fingerprints on it, is found near the body together with some shell casings. The gun and casings are linked to the gun so the woman is arrested for murder. The characters who accompany Tom, are Wilma, Wilma’s daughter Laurie Ann, Bocephus “Bo” Haynes, Rick Drake, Powell Conrad, the District Attorney, and Wade Richey, a police detective. Bo Haynes, a former student and good friend of Tom’s has had his license to practice law suspended so, he agrees to assist Tom as his investigator. Several months before the real work on Wilma Newton’s case begins, Rick’s father is killed in a hit and run accident, so Rick has been out of the office adjusting to the loss of his beloved father and helping his mother on her farm so he will be no assistance to Tom unless he can be encouraged to pitch in.This is a story of murder, a hired assassin, drugs, alcohol, greed, dishonesty, suspense, and twists and turns you won’t see coming, some of which will have you holding your breath. Robert Bailey is a master of writing legal thrillers, of helping his readers get to know his characters, and of making them human. I promise you, if you read The Professor and Between Black and White before you read The Last Trial you will need to have a box of tissues handy and if you read the Author’s Note at the end of the book you will wonder, as I did, how Robert Bailey could write this book. I guess he was just “minding his dad.”

I have great sympathy for the author, being a cancer survivor myself, and having lost a greatly loved one to cancer. But the story, after a good beginning, degenerates into silliness about three quarters of the way through. The witness to the murder was sitting on the lap of her professor facing outwards having rough sex when she heard gunshots and then looked through an astronomy telescope to see the murderer 300 yards away.First, in my experiences with sex no one is capable of coitus interruptus and focussing on a telescope eyepiece, particularly an astronomical instrument with a very small field of view and presumably focussed on infinity, so blurred at 300 yards. Then a 65 year old woman, all muddy, staggers out of the woods and proceeds to offer to sell joints to two drunken college students.Way to stay inconspicuous. It just won't work, and a decent beginning bites the dust.

This is Robert Bailey's 3rd book and in my opinion it is the best one . Some writers never learn and never become better .I am so anxious to receive the 4th and last of the series. Unfortunately, it will be a whole year before the book is released .I will very much miss all the characters. I have read many books in my life and have never felt this way prior to ROBERT BAILY.Thank you!!

It stands alone! This book was chosen for our book club and none of us except the one who chose it had read the others. Felt odd to read it out of order but you couldn’t tell at all. The characters were still so well developed and introduced! Tom, Bob, Wilma, Jack, Bully and so many more. And lest we forget the young gal who starts this ball rolling, Laurie Ann. Lots of twists and turns and “who done it’s?” The writer keeps you engaged and wanting more. I wasn’t ready for it to end and look forward to starting with book number one and reading through. The Alabama and especially Huntsville references were a sweet treat!!

It's a sad book, but so are all of The Professor's books are. I am encouraged by the acknowledgement at the end. Boy, this one really threw me for a loop! Talk about a shocking end! I highly recommend this book, but especially in the case of this series,it's important to read them in order. I just wish there wasn't such a huge space between the release of these books. I might just start them all again from the beginning.

Having read all three books in this series, I am impressed with the humanity that is imbued in the main characters. There is an old fashioned sense of good vs evil with honor and goodness prevailing. While not essential, it helps to read these books in order as characters reappear and factor strongly into the plot lines.Tom and Bo are true champions of Justice. The courtroom scenes are always fraught with tension. Even the prosecution team plays fair when justice is on the line.Interestingly the Late Bear Bryant also figures heavily in the character development. Clearly the author is a fan.I can't wait for the next book. Given the world we are currently living in, this series is a breath of fresh air carrying hope for the future

This is an interesting and suspenceful story, with enough clues to solve the mystery, but just enough misdirection to make the ending a surprise. The characters are well developed, and it made me hope that McMurtrie will still be around to attend one more "last trial".One thing I noticed is that the story reads like an extended "product placement" ad. No one gets into their car, they get into their Toyota Camry or their Tundra truck. Or they wear an UnderArmor tshirt. Or Nike tennis shoes. Well ok, eventually one "product" becomes important in solving the who-done-it. Maybe it has to be done that way to allow the clues to work. Nevertheless, it caught my attention while reading the novel.
