This is a great cookbook. To be honest, Isa Chandra Moskowitz hasn't yet written a cookbook that isn't great. But this is one of her best -- full of creative, vegetable-packed, deliciously-seasoned and -sauced recipes. There are dozens of weeknight dinners, along with a chapter of "Sunday Night Suppers" (AKA, stuff that takes longer but is worth it). And the book itself is a handsome one -- easy to read full page spreads, high quality paper, many beautiful pictures. (Note: I see that several previous reviews call out the book for having print that is too small -- this isn't something that I noticed at all and my eyes aren't the greatest). I have dozens of vegan cookbooks, but if I had to pare down my collection, it would be an easy decision to keep this one.Here are some of the recipes I tried:Alphabet Soup: This is a delicious soup. Imagine the best version possible of alphabet soup from a can. This is that soup.Chickpea-Rice Soup with Cabbage: A filling, tasty, and comforting soup based on Eastern European flavors.Sweet Potato and Red Curry Soup: This soup, which also has rice and kale, is so good. The broth has ginger, red curry, and lime, and it's excellent.Shroomy Hot and Sour Soup: A perfect hot and sour soup packed with richness from the mushrooms.Chunky Miso Vegetable Soup: Earthy, simple, and good.Harira: This is an unusual (to me anyway) soup with Moroccan flavors. It has eggplant, mint, pasta, saffron, and chickpeas. I never would have thought to combine these in a soup, but it works really well! It's a whole meal in a bowl.Babushka Borscht: I love beets and this borscht with cashew cream and dill is a perfect showcase for them. It's also very easy!Dragon Noodle Salad: Radishes, rice, noodles, cucumber, peanut sauce -- it's a great spring salad!Falafel Burgers: The texture of this chickpea burger never quite came together for me -- mine were too crumbly. That said, I've had that issue with other bean burgers before, so it could be my technique. All the flavors were quite delicious.Red-Hot BLTs: I am obsessed with Frank's Red Hot Sauce and this sandwich shows it off wonderfully. So good!Chicky Tuna Salad Sandwiches: Using chickpeas to replace "tuna" isn't new, but this is the first time I've seen sunflower seeds thrown into the mix as well. I am a chickpea salad lover and this is one of the better ones that I have made.Sunflower Mac: The sunflower seed trend continues in this cashew-free take on mac and cheese. The great thing about this recipe is that it makes so much sauce -- more than enough to cover any extra vegetables you want to add to your meal. Very tasty.Puttanesca Pomodoro: Very good, very easy, classic puttanesca.Olive Angel Hair: This is pasta smothered in olives, walnuts, and seared brussels sprouts. I adore all those flavors, so this was perfection for me.Lentil-a-Roni: This is like Beef-a-Roni reimagined by the Lentil Council. It's one of those ingredients that is much better than the simple ingredients list might lead you to believe.Goddess Noodles: Noodles, tempeh, and broccoli mixed in a lemony-tahini sauce. It's excellent.Coconut Chana Saag: Chickpeas and greens covered in a sauce full of coconut and spices. Very delicious.Down-Home Curry: Quick, tasty, one-pot curry crammed with vegetables.Everyday Pad Thai: True to the name, this comes together very quickly. It's very good!Pizza Bowl: Everything good about pizza, but in a bowl. This is one of my favorite recipes because I don't think I would have thought to do this in a million years and it was so good I actually dreamed about eating it.Nirvana Enchilada Casserole: This is one of the "Sunday Night Suppers." I won't lie . . . it was kind of a production. But the results were incredible, it makes a bunch (8 servings), and it freezes really well. So it was worth spending a chunk of my Sunday night on it. This is a dish I would make to impress people.Sesame Tofu: Good basic baked tofu recipe.Chipotle Sausage Hash: A perfect savory breakfast hash dressed with a tahini sauce.Jumbo Oatmeal-Raisin Cookies: Giant chewy cookies with a perfect texture. These also freeze really well (for everyone who doesn't want to eat 10 giant cookies in a couple of days).In summary, this is an excellent cookbook for people who want more options for weeknight dinners, delicious vegetable options, and some more elaborate (but delicious!) weekend options. I can open the book to virtually any page and see something that I would love to eat. Highly recommended.

This is the best vegan cookbook I have ever used, and I have been trying out different vegan/vegetarian cookbooks since the 80's. What I like about Isa's cooking style is that she never leaves a flavor profile flat or seeming like it is missing something. She makes very wise and well-curated use of mushrooms, tomatoes (in various forms), lentils, nutritional yeast, broths, spicy peppers, and citrus juices (among other things) to add something mysterious and unforgettable to your dishes. Have you ever tried to make a vegan creamy sauce that just came out tasting flat and yeasty? Or a grain/bean salad that just tasted one-dimensional and vinegary? Isa's magic hand really comes through in this cookbook and helps you create full, rich, multidimensional flavors that exceed the tastiness of comparable meat dishes. My favorites so far have been the New England Glam Chowder (truly phenomenal) and Sweet & Sour Brown Rice Salad w/ Fresh Herbs (a big hit at a yoga friends gathering a few months ago). I really use this cookbook - I am not 100% vegan, but I eat many vegan meals because I cook from Isa Does It so frequently.

In truth, I never cooked before I became vegan, and Isa's first book -- the now classic Vegan with a Vengeance -- taught me practically everything I know about vegan cooking. Isa is a one-woman vegan empire and rightfully so: she's hilarious, her recipes are delicious and her cookbooks are informative and entertaining.Isa's recipes are so great because they feature foods and flavors that are always appealing: bold, satisfying and crave-worthy. I enjoy superfancy food at superfancy restaurants on occasion, but I have no interest whatsoever in making that kind of food at home -- at least not very often. I want fairly simply food that bursts with flavor, but that's quick and easy to make. The genius in Isa's recipes is how completely approachable they are, regardless of cooking skill. This is food for Real Life.Isa Does It is not a departure from her other cookbooks, except that this one is much, much prettier. The food photography is sumptuous.For me, the entire sandwich section is a stand out (the chickpea "tuna" sandwiches are to die for); the curry, burgers and stir fries, too. Last week, like a bad vegan, I ate her rosemary chocolate chip cookies for breakfast (and lived to tell the tale). I love the bowls, which are complete meals unto themselves. I haven't made the Glam Chowder yet, but my mouth waters looking at that photo. Everyday Pad Thai? Yes, please!This is an especially fantastic cookbook for the novice cook AND for the novice vegan: Isa Does It is FULL of instruction that makes vegan cooking seem accessible and fun -- which it is. This is a must-have for die-hard Isa fans like myself -- those who read her cookbooks like good prose. For me, Isa is the love-child of David Sedaris and Julia Child; her books inspire over-eating and laughter in almost equal measure.To state the obvious: yes, you should buy this cookbook.
