From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up-Blue works hard to disguise the magic in her blood, especially when she's working on her attempts at turning metal into gold. Magic has been illegal in the kingdom of Balavata for 16 years, ever since a blood wraith was imprisoned on the outskirts of the royal city, not far from the cottage where Blue and her father live. She's worried about the homeless children in the city, who have started to go missing. The protagonist is also giving alchemy lessons to Nessa, the young princess and Blue's dear friend. Who has time for magic when Kellan, the irritatingly charming crown prince, is suddenly hanging around all the time? This reimagining of "Cinderella" presents all the markers of the fairy tale, complete with a magical shoe that secures Blue's fate, but Redwine has crafted a world filled with dark magic and intrigue as the setting for her story. Blue is an active and passionate protagonist who is invested in helping others, frequently at her own expense. The romance between Blue and the prince is a slow, simmering burn as childhood antagonism turns to something that is deep and true. VERDICT For general purchase and fans of romantic fantasy.-Jen McConnel, Queen's University, Ont.α(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Purely enjoyable! Thanks to Edelweiss for the opportunity to read and review The Blood Spell by C. J. Redwine, book four of the Ravenspire series. The books in this series are more companion books than sequels. Blue works with her father at the family store and she’s in the process of turning lead into gold with alchemy. Blue wants to help the homeless and poverty-stricken people in the kingdom with the gold she hopes to create. Kellan is next in line to rule the kingdom and he doesn’t enjoy the politics or having to watch his back constantly, but he does enjoy a bit of danger and fun. Dinah is losing her empire and needs money since her husband lost everything due to his gambling habit. She’s discovered that Blue is trying to make gold and Dinah wants Blue to work for her so she can claim everything Blue does. Blue’s life has been turned upside down because of Dinah’s actions, making Blue a Cinderella of sorts. Blue overhears Dinah talking loudly with someone she owes money too and she decides to help Dinah’s daughters, so they won’t be taken to pay off their family debt. Little does she know that Dinah planned for Blue to hear the conversation all along. Dinah’s manipulative nature and Blue’s integrity come to fisticuffs as the action and suspense rise. I enjoy Blue’s and Kellan’s relationship and how they’re both very stubborn. Princess Nessa is a young, extremely brave soul. The characters round out this fantasy and I enjoyed every minute reading this book, 5 stars!

Omg! I love this book!!*As the gray-black light within the forest sank into the total darkness of yet another night, the wraith stalked the edges of the vast prison, hurling itself against the invisible spell that bound it here, feeling the magic spark, blister and burn. One day, it would break free. It would rush over the hills and move through the long stretches of farmland that stood between it abd the city. It would find its sister and those who had helped her hunt it down, and it would destroy them all.*First off the cover is fanfreakingtastic and the beautiful blue map on the inside cover.Anyhoo! More kudos for another character with some kind of issue. Dear Nessa can’t talk and they use a sign language with her! She’s also an awesome character!Blue is one of the main characters. She has magic blood and she just wants to work on things but you can be killed for using magic. Then her sweet father is murdered and the evil jerkhole, Dinah and her kids take over Blue’s life. Ohfor the love of Pete! I wanted someone to drop kick Dinah off the roof!!Then there is Prince Kellan; sweet pea 😃So things happen, some twat let out the wraith, oh and it feeds on kids and such. Then some other stuff and some smack downs happen, then happy ever after 😃I have to do it that way or my big old mouth with spoil something!!Anyhoo! Happy Reading!!Mel 🖤🐶🐺🐾

I’ve read almost all of CJ’s books and this one is now my favorite. She takes a story—Cinderella— that’s been told so many times and makes it completely new (especially what she did with the infamous glass slippers). The politics, the magic, the social issues, there’s such depth to this story. And the blood wraith twist I did not see coming. And Nessa is one of my favorite side characters of all time.

If you like Cinderella you'll love Blue. This is one of those books that you can't wait to see what happens next all the while dreading the end of the story. Now the looonnngggg wait for the next book in the Ravenspire series begins.

Full of mystery, magic, heartbreak, and a beautiful enemies-to-friends-to-lovers story!! Complete with all the Cinderella elements and a good old-fashioned happily-ever-after ending!! What more could a Cinderella fanatic ask for?!! Highly Recommend!!

Loved this book. This is a great mix of a few different versions of Cinderella. I couldn't put it down

I’ve always been fond of the original Grimm Brothers’ Cinderella, and I happily discovered that the latest installment in C.J. Redwine’s Ravenspire series, The Blood Spell, was Cinderella inspired. Cinderella was one of the more gruesome Grimm tales, so I was kind of excited to read this one, though I wasn’t expecting it to be as gory as the brothers first made it! It was actually a really good retelling of the favored tale! I quite enjoyed its differences and similarities.Blue is an alchemist who has recently been trying to find a way to turn rocks or other metals into gold. It’s not exactly legal, but she’s hoping to use the money to help better her town. She’s been noticing a string of orphans have been disappearing lately and it’s making her worried. Then there’s the fact that on the outskirts of town, there’s a wraith imprisoned in a nearby forest making life just a little bit unsettled. There’s a history there that soon gets revealed over time. Then there’s Kellan, yes, the very same Kellan we saw in the beginning of The Traitor Prince, who is returning home having graduated from school. I suspect that the events of this book take place at the same time as The Traitor Prince based on hints and other things we saw happening. Kellan is coming home to take his rightful place on the throne to be king. And his first task is to choose a bride from among the head families. But Kellan just isn’t ready for that particular responsibility. You can probably start to guess where things are headed by this point! Although Kellan and Blue were something of childhood friends, they argued more than got along with one another and that trend has extended to their teenage years as well. So it’s not exactly a fall-in-love at first sight kind of gig! I love that their romance was slow to build and the way they eventually came together was heartbreakingly sweet. It’s not long before tragedy strikes and Blue finds her life changing dramatically around her, remember your Cinderella story folks because big changes soon happen to Blue that leave her in the hands of Dinah, a powerful woman on the council who is basically a dear friend of the queen. But Dinah has her own ambitions and plans and they just so happen to involve Blue. Dinah will stop at nothing until she gets what she wants. What I’ve come to love about this series so far, besides the fact that we’re constantly getting a favorite fairy tale retold, is that the story is told from the heroine, the hero, and the villain’s point of view! All three key characters get to tell their part of the story and I find this to be an ingenious way to do things! While I have yet to sympathize for any of these villains, I do think it’s interesting to get their point of view and see what’s driving them!C.J. does incredibly well at keeping the favored parts and elements of the Cinderella story woven into The Blood Spell! I truly love these iconic and memorable moments continuing to play a part in the story. I love that it can be different and familiar at the same time! C.J. really knows her fairy tales that’s for sure! Although, a few bits felt a little more like the Disney version versus the Grimm’s tale, mostly with a sort of fairy godmother figure since in the original tale it was more the magic of a tree. But magic is magic in the end! Lol.I’m most excited to see what tale will be told next! The bane of reading an early copy is the longer wait for the next book. I just finished binge reading the series to date and I’ve found that there’s never really a clue as to what’s next. But one thing remains consistent and that’s seeing familiar faces in each and every tale! I cannot wait for the next installment of this series and fingers crossed that there will be more! I simply cannot get enough of this series!Overall Rating 5/5 stars
