*Starred Review* The world has changed in the six years since the eighth edition of this atlas was published, and the new edition reflects some of the changes. The basic arrangement and look of the atlas are similar, but there is an interesting focus on major trouble spots in the worldIraq and Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan, the Korean Peninsula, and the Caucasus (which includes Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia)with each allotted double-page map spreads. There are also new maps for Greenland, the Amazon region, Greece and the Aegean Sea, and the Horn of Africa. The continent of Africa, which has 20 percent of the land of the earth, is shown in four maps. Atlases have always been a help in understanding the daily news. A recent article in the New York Times told of a volcanic eruption of Mount Merapi in Indonesia. The location of the volcano is not in the atlas, but a nearby city affected by the eruption, Yogyakarta, is. The desert area of the Chilean mine disaster can be found as well as two of the towns in Switzerland near the Gotthard Base Tunnel, which, when completed, will be the longest tunnel in the world. The Oceans section has been completely redone and is easier to read, with land masses in black and the oceans in blue. There is also a new index for the undersea features. The Space section has been updated with a new map of Mars showing its eastern and western hemispheres on a double-page spread. The Flags and Facts pages in the Nations section have been redesigned, rewritten, and updated and now include more data as well as larger locator maps. The all-important place-name index has increased to more than 150,000 names. As new features are added, sections are eliminated, and the ninth edition has no city maps. National Geographic should be commended for publishing a new atlas in these times of fewer print reference sources. Print atlases still have a use in libraries or in personal collections, and the ninth edition is recommended for any library that does not have an up-to-date atlas. The good news is that the list price is only $10 more than the eighth edition. --Christine Bulson

Love this Atlas. I had the 6th edition (along with the NG Historical Atlas of the World) and it was time to upgrade. Keep your eye out for specials on Amazon. . .I got this for $70 on special, and with my Amazon Prme, no additional charge for shipping.Only problem was with shipping from Amazon. The package always arrived on time, but it took four attempts to get an undamaged copy from their facility in Kentucky. For an organization that started out selling books over the internet, you would think that they would have mastered the art of packaging high cost books. Throughout the process of getting this tome shipped to me, amazon did not once use bubbl-wrap or place sufficient packing material inside to prevent the book and its slipcase from sliding about inside the shipping box. Additionally, the shipping boxes always arrived with shipping damage from the carrier - crushed corners, punctures, etc. the final shipment arrived with scuff marks from the cardboard box because the atlas was sliding around inside the shipping box. Fortunately, those scuff marks were confined to the thin, plastic shrink-wrap around the book and slipcase.Overall, it took 6-8 weeks from the time I ordered the book (with Amazon Prime) until I received an undamaged copy of the atlas. This, despite many e-mails, photographs, chat sessions and telephone calls between me Amazon Customer Service and me.Bottom line: Great piece of work by National Geographic. Poor Marks to Amazon on their shipping and handling.

As expected from National Geographic. I grew up with the 5th edition of this atlas, and now that I need it for my kids this was my first choice. The atlas (dare I call it a book) opens to 2 feet x 1.5 feet which allows for copious detail on the pages. On the front cover and back cover are keys to the plates to help you find the right map quickly. The first 20 plates are global in scope and detail not only the basics, such as the world physical and political maps, but also tectonics, climate, demographics, resources, and trade, with multiple whole world insets detailing subsets of data. The atlas is then broken down by continent. Each of the continents excluding Antarctica also have a physical plate and political plate.N. America: 22 plates, counting an additional Physical map of the United States (being a US centric Atlas).S. America: 5 platesEurope: 14 platesAsia: 13 platesAfrica: 5 platesOceania: 5 plates (AU Physical, AU Political, NZ & New Guinea Political, Pacific Basin Political, Pacific Island Inset Plate).7 plates: Antarctica Physical, Arctic Ocean (North Pole) Political, and 5 Ocean Floor plates (the fifth being a South Pole plate)10 plates include maps of select cities from around the world7 extra-terrestrial plates: N. Sky, S. Sky, Lunar, Mars, Solar System, Milky Way, and Known Universe14 plates with tables of flags, fast facts, and figures. Included here are the US states and CA provinces. The atlas also includes a list of abbreviations, foreign terms, an intro to modern map making and projections. Finally, the atlas has a 134p index of places. The index includes a section for lunar locations and sites of human lunar activity. All around, the atlas is as good as it has ever been.

As a dedicated cartophile I have collected hundreds of atlases, including every edition of the National geographic Atlas in the last 40 years. The maps continue to be superb, BUT the emphasis is overwhelmingly on the northern hemisphere and islands. There are detailed maps of the United States, Canada and Europe, but once south of the Equator there are none. This is an ongoing NGS fault.South Africa, the Rio de Janeiro to Buenos Aires area, and southeast Australia are examples of areas where detailed maps would be appropriate.Australia, the same size as the USA and more than twice the size of the European Union is covered by just one map. Perversely the most remotely populated areas of Australia (Cape York and top end of the Northern Territory) are covered in great detail on the edge of the Papua-New Guinea map. New Zealand and Papua-New Guinea, both a fraction the size of Australia, are mapped in far greater detail, and uninhabited Pacific and Antarctic islands receive detailed coverage. Maps of the areas mentioned above have been published by the NGS, just not in their atlases. Many of the thematic maps at the beginning of the atlas are new, but some are too predictable. The maps of cell phone subscriptions, traditional phone lines and personal computers are almost identical. The map showing passenger flights totally ignores South America and the fourth busiest air route in the world between Sydney and Melbourne. And just what is the "Mexico City effect" mentioned on the Natural Hazards map. It is not defined anywhere on the map or its caption.Even the mighty NGS can make mistakes. On the map of the Arctic Ocean Floor, Alaska's Kenai Peninsula is labeled as Seward Peninsula, while the true Seward Peninsula at Bering Strait is correctly labeled.Overall the Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World is yet to be beaten.
