This is a very thought provoking story featuring Paige, an artist wracked by self doubt and Nicholas, a cardiologist who seemingly has never experienced self doubt. The golden thread that ties the characters together and keeps the story in place is the story of mother and child. The story opens in 1993 when Paige, then 25 was locked out of her house by her estranged husband, Nicholas after she left him and their infant son Max for a three-month search for her own mother. Paige's mother Maisie "May" walked out on her family in 1972 when Paige was then 5. Paige never really stopped searching for her although her father has accepted his former wife's decision to leave their family. Paige doubts her own maternal instincts and, when her son is 3 months old just drives back to her hometown of Chicago without a word to anyone other than Nicholas, who tells her in effect not to bother to return.Once in Chicago, Paige connects with an old friend with a shared history plus a savvy detective who tracks her mother down. Once they find each other, they "get" each other. Maisie, as free as the horses she trains shares that with Paige.Paige is an artist with some psychic ability. When she first arrives in New England in 1985, she immediately lands a job in a greasy spoon. Her drawings of the people there have won her a job as a wait staff. She has no degree and an unfortunate decision prompted her to leave her hometown and a chance to attend RISD (Rhode Island School of Design). Her drawings all have subliminal images of aspects of people's lives, things that are eerily accurate. It is at the greasy spoon that she meets Nicholas. After a short courtship, they get married. Son Max is born in 1993.Once Paige has confronted her past, sadder but wiser she returns home. Trying to get back into Nicholas' good graces is not easy and, surprisingly enough Paige finds allies where she least expects them. Shortly upon her return, she finds a way to trail Nicholas. She becomes a volunteer at Mass General where he is a surgeon. Her being hired as a volunteer and her being hired in the greasy spoon seem a little implausible, but c'est la vie. It's still a good story. This is one book that has no legal mystery or court room scene. A legal matter does come up and a lawyer does make a brief appearance in the story, but that is not the focus of the story. I admit I was not overly fond of Paige, but I did hope things would work out between her and Nicholas. Fortunately this book does not devolve into a cliche.Jodi Picoult is a first class author and her books are masterpieces. This is one of her earlier books and I admit I didn't think it was nearly as good as her subsequent books. Even so, it is worth the read.Martha Reeves & the Vandellas' 1964 hit "Nowhere to Run To (Nowhere to Hide)" and the Dave Clark 5's 1965 hit "Catch Us If You Can" could well underscore this book.

Oh my! This is a tear-jerker! I love a book where I learn something new and this book provided that opportunity. The leading female character is an artist--untrained, purely gifted and passionate about her work. The leading male character is a budding cardiacthoracic surgeon very passionate about his work. She is working as a waitress and he is a Harvard student when they meet, fall in love, and marry. When his family disowns him because he is marrying a waitress, she becomes the support to get him through medical school and into his residency. To do that, she must take a second job and sacrifice her art and her hopes of going to school herself. But, she does it. They live in Cambridge not too far from his very wealthy parents--mother a professional photographer with a fabulous reputation and father a physician himself. Their struggle is so real that I found myself exhausted from following his days--12 to 15 hours long--and her tiring work at two jobs, keeping house, and having a hot meal ready for him when he finally shows up. Then, the inevitable: they become pregnant--not planned! Therein comes the real novel. Her struggles with the pregnancy without him to depend upon are spellbinding. The infant with its colic, crying, whining, and constant hunger wears her out. At length, she makes one tiny mistake and the baby falls off of the sofa. That stuns her and infuriates him. Then the real action begins. I will warn you, that you will be angry at times--so much so that you will want to put the book down, but will be unable to do so. Then you will want to hit someone. Finally, you will be so upset that you want to yell at them. And, just that quickly comes resolution. You really must read this book. You will learn so much about heart surgery that you will want to become a donor. You will learn so much about drawing that you will want to try it yourself. You will be better for having read this book. It is Picoult at her finest!

Disappointing- strange tale of the likelihood of inheriting behaviour from a parent. Weak premise, inconsistent characterisation and hard to believe love story. Unusually sloppy from Jodie Picoult. Tedious and misses the emotional mark, not worth the time reading it or the cost to buy it.

A couple who were raised a world apart, fall in love and start a family. One was raised in Chicago to parents who don't comfort her. When she was 5 years old, her mother left. The other grew up in Cambridge to an affluent family who never wanted for anything. This is a story about how they shared their lives. It's a story where you hear each one's perspective as to what is happening.Read the book. Savor the words.Jodi has a way with words unlike any other. Pick up her books. You won't be disappointed!

Wanted to read an earlier novel by this author as the one I read first was most intriguing and controversial. "Change of Heart". However, this was a well written story that had me wondering what was it about, where was it going and left me frustrated with the main charecter. The many people introduced had me anticipating where and when the story would gel.I will continue to read other books by this author, as her writing is clear and heart felt.

She has captivated my time with her story telling. Each word grabbed me by relating to the experiece of young marriage, childbirth, and stuggle. I remember the adulation of the other and wonder why it hurts so much, when insecure feelings grab at our guts--of misunderstanding thoughts. I do not have to say "You have to read this!" You already know that because this author never fails to tell it like it is. An amazing collection of words--Thank you Jodi!

I couldn't find the center of this story. Usually she has a timely event that the characters each face in their own way. This book had no main event, it reads like a poorly planned 1970's romance with class issues, Ireland, horses, motherhood, doctors...all swirling about. What a disappointing read. I usually enjoy her books.
